Antique Algerian Wool Tapestry

$0.00

This exceptional and rare woven cover in soft blue and undyed ivory wool, was made in Algeria, by Berber tribeswomen, c. 1910. Today, this sophisticated weaving tradition has largely disappeared in Algeria. Large, finely woven with soft wool, this piece was most likely made to be used as a bench or divan cover, using a tapestry technique known as ‘rollakan’ (this is the Swedish term for it), where the colors overlap to create a perfectly smooth surface, without the slits typically found on Turkish kilims. An interesting element is the addition of several decorative motifs rendered in wool pile, which gives the surface an added dimension. Condition is excellent. 41.5” 86”
