Early Swedish Bridal or Dowry Bedcover (half)

$0.00

This is a fantastic Swedish Bridal (or Dowry) Bedcover (half), woven with the labor intensive rolakan weaving technique, which uses double interlocking tapestry. The piece is dated in the outer border (1807) and initialed (K K D). It was most likely made in the Gärds or Villands district (härad), Northeast SKÅNE region of southern Sweden. It is in exceptional condition for a textile of this age. In that this is only one half, there’s a possibility that the other half was never woven, and that this one was used as a bench cushion cover, if it was ever used at all. I think it was in a dowry chest for much of the last 200 years. Handspun wool on handspan, natural linen. Vivid and clear, all natural dyes. 26.5” x 79”
